A Technology Looking for a Reason to Exist
If you walked through CEDIA Expo or CES in the last two years, you saw the 8K push in full force. Samsung has been selling 8K QLED televisions since 2018. LG followed. Sony followed. The screens are genuinely impressive in a showroom — sharp to the point of looking almost artificial, the way a photograph looks when you press your face too close to it. The resolution is real. The problem is everything else.
There is almost no native 8K content available to consumers. Not on streaming platforms. Not on disc — there is no 8K Blu-ray format, and there likely won't be one given where the physical media market is headed. The handful of 8K YouTube videos and demo reels that exist were created specifically to sell the hardware. Your favorite films, your sports broadcasts, your streaming library — essentially none of it was shot, finished, or delivered in 8K. What you're watching on an 8K set is almost always upscaled 4K or, worse, upscaled 1080p.
Upscaling Is Good Now. That Doesn't Make It the Same Thing.
To be fair, the upscaling processors inside current Samsung Neo QLED 8K sets and Sony's Bravia XR line are genuinely sophisticated. They use AI-assisted algorithms that do a credible job of extrapolating detail from lower-resolution sources. If you sit eight feet from an 85-inch screen, you may not be able to tell the difference between native 4K and well-upscaled 4K on an 8K panel. That's not nothing.
But it raises an honest question for anyone spending serious money on a display right now: are you paying a significant premium — often $3,000 to $8,000 more than a comparable 4K set — for a capability you will not actually use for the foreseeable future? For most homeowners, the answer is yes, and the better investment is almost always a reference-quality 4K display instead.
Where the Real Action Is: Laser Projection
While the 8K television conversation has dominated trade show floors, the more meaningful shift in home theater display technology has been happening in laser projection — and it's a better story for people building dedicated cinema rooms.
Sony's VPL-XW7000ES and the Epson LS12000 have reset expectations for what a sub-$10,000 projector can do. Both deliver native 4K with laser light sources that last upward of 20,000 hours — meaning you're unlikely to ever replace the lamp in the life of the installation. The contrast performance, particularly in dark scenes, has caught up meaningfully with high-end LCD and OLED panels. JVC's DLA-NZ9 sits at the higher end of the market and represents perhaps the most complete home cinema projector available today: native 8K-capable, though again, without content to match.
For rooms in the 15-foot to 25-foot throw range that are common in Hill Country homes with dedicated media spaces, a laser projector on a 120-inch to 150-inch screen produces an experience that no flat-panel television can replicate. The scale changes what you feel, not just what you see.
What This Means If You're Planning a Build in Austin or the Hill Country
The Texas Hill Country has seen a significant wave of custom home construction over the past several years — larger properties, dedicated entertainment spaces, homeowners who are thinking carefully about how to spend their AV budget. The display decision is one of the most consequential calls in that process, and the 8K marketing noise makes it harder than it should be.
Here's the practical reality: if you're designing a dedicated theater room with controlled lighting, a screen size above 110 inches, and a real acoustic treatment plan, a high-quality laser projector is almost certainly the right anchor for that space. If you're building a media room or great room that pulls double duty — family viewing, sports, ambient use — a premium 4K OLED or mini-LED panel from LG or Samsung gives you image quality that is genuinely excellent without the installation complexity of a projection setup.
What you probably don't need is an 8K television at a significant premium, unless you enjoy owning things slightly ahead of their time and you understand clearly what you're getting for that money. Some people do. It's a legitimate choice. It just shouldn't be a default one because a salesperson told you it was the future.
The Longer View
8K will matter eventually. Broadcast infrastructure will catch up. Streaming bandwidth will improve. Content pipelines will modernize. But that timeline is measured in years, not months — and the homes being built and equipped right now deserve honest guidance, not speculative premium charges.
The best display technology for your space is the one that performs at the highest level given the content you're actually watching today, in the room you've actually built. That answer looks different for every project, and it almost never starts with a resolution number.
